October Field Trip and titbits

Outings – Herberton & Irvinebank
Our next outing is scheduled for Sunday 29th October.
An early stopover in Herberton is recommended for those who want to photograph the flowering trees – Jacaranda and Flame Trees (Brachychiton aceriflorius) which will be in full bloom. Herberton is 97km from Cairns via the Gillies Highway and you would need to allow 1hr 50m for the trip.
Irvinebank is a further 25km from Herberton and the road is mainly gravel. One of our members has recently traveled this road and reports that it is in good to fair condition. Some members have expressed concern that Irvinebank may be too hot for an October outing. The township is 750m above sea level (about the same as Atherton) and as such, we should expect temperatures about 5 degrees cooler than Cairns. Continue Reading →

September Happenings – Cooktown Weekend

September 23rd & 24th – Cooktown Weekend

A number of members have indicated they will drive up on the Friday and stay for two nights.
Here is an informal schedule for the weekend. Whilst there are plenty of photographic opportunities in Cooktown and we will all be tempted to do our own thing, there will be a few group activities which we hope will be attended by as many people as possible.

Cooktown is located 260km north of Cairns by the coastal road (unsealed and recommended for 4WD vehicles only) and 350 km by the inland road (accessible by conventional vehicles). The Cape York Peninsula begins north of Cairns, extending almost 1000 kms to the geographical tip of Australia in the north. It covers about 137,000 square kilometres -the Coral Sea is to the east of the Peninsula, the Torres Strait to the north, and the Gulf of Carpentaria to the west.

Friday 22nd – Drive to Cooktown
Photo opportunities on the drive up, via Mulligan Highway: Continue Reading →

August Field Trip – Sunday 27th

Come and enjoy a wonderful tropical Winter Day at Munro Martin Parkland and The Esplanade.

Meet at 9am at the Florence St entrance of Munro Martin Park. Hopefully the trellises of Flame of the Forest (Mucuna bennettii) and Jade Vine (Strongylodon macrobotrys) will be in bloom. If not, there is plenty of interest in the parkland.
Click on image to view large. After photography in the parklands then to coffee/brunch at the RSL Club and afterwards, walk the Esplanade. Pop up steel bands will be playing as part of Festival Cairns’ Panzfest. It should be a good opportunity for people, music and dance shots and perhaps to capture the winning image for our February competition.
