While attending University in the early 1970s, a friend loaned me his Canon SLR camera and I was enthralled at the capabilities and after purchasing the complete set of Time Life Manuals on The Camera, Light and Film, Colour, and The Print (a set I still have), I embarked on a journey of pursuing, capturing and developing images.
A Konica SLR accompanied me in my travels throughout Europe and after returning to Australia I took every opportunity at my disposal to indulge in my continued interest by photographing with a Canon T90 SLR with lenses that “reached” into nature for me.
Deciding to live in PNG in 1998, was the compelling reason to explore the world of digital photography with a TTL Olympus Camedia, as I presumed that film would be difficult to obtain. Digital Cameras were very expensive at this time, and not yet achieving the quality of film, but the Olympus served me very well and was not upgraded until Canon introduced cost effective EOS DSLRs in 2003.
Joining the Cairns Photographic Society in mid-2011 has allowed me to review and reinforce the technical aspects of my Photography, but more importantly has been the opportunity to understand from the outstanding work of the photographers who are members, how to artistically compose and exploit photographic opportunities. My photographic journey continues.
